The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) has announced a new oil and gas discovery in the prolific Abu Sennan field, located in Egypt’s Western Desert. The find, made through the GPR-1X exploration well, marks the second major discovery in the area in just three months, raising hopes for untapped reserves still hidden beneath this mature basin.
According to a statement issued Sunday by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, initial testing results reveal that the new well can yield up to 1,400 barrels of crude oil per day, along with approximately 1 million cubic feet of natural gas from the Bahariya formation. Notably, the discovery is expected to contribute an additional 2 million barrels of recoverable oil to Egypt’s proven reserves—a substantial addition at a time when energy security and domestic production are strategic priorities.
EGPC Chairman Mohamed Abdel Majeed confirmed that the GPR-1X well is currently undergoing on-site production testing. “What’s especially promising is that electrical logging data indicates the potential for further petroleum-bearing zones in the Abu Rawash G and B formations,” Abdel Majeed noted, emphasizing the field’s continued prospectivity. This breakthrough follows another successful well completed in March within the same concession. Both wells were drilled using artificial intelligence technologies, a strategic move by EGPC to modernize its exploration efforts in aging fields.
Oil analysts see the find as a strong indicator that the Western Desert remains underexplored, particularly in its deeper and more technically challenging formations. “This proves that mature fields, when revisited with modern geoscience tools, can still yield surprises,” said Dr. Hossam El-Badrawy, an independent petroleum geologist and former consultant with BP Egypt.
