In its continuous pursuit to enhance global cinematic collaboration, the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) participated once again in the “Belt and Road” Week, hosted in Shanghai, China, from June 18 to 21, as a segment of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival.
This year marks the seventh successive participation of CIFF in the Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance, an initiative introduced by the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2018. The alliance now includes over 55 film organizations and festivals spanning 48 countries, such as Egypt, China, Portugal, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Mongolia.
Representing CIFF at this event was Mohamed Tarek, the Festival’s Artistic Director and an esteemed film critic, who engaged in official alliance meetings. The dialogues centered on strategies to bolster collaboration among member festivals, facilitate film exchanges, and organize transnational cultural and cinematic events. These endeavors aim to elevate the global profile of Arab cinema and create new avenues for filmmakers from alliance member countries.
Mohamed Tarek remarked on the occasion, stating, “The Cairo International Film Festival’s engagement in the Belt and Road Week is integral to our strategy to explore new markets for Egyptian and Arab cinema and to establish stronger connections with major international festivals. Our discussions with the Shanghai International Film Festival’s management have resulted in concrete steps towards enhanced collaboration, such as promoting Chinese film participation and special screenings at CIFF, as well as supporting Arab films’ entry into Asian markets, with a particular focus on China as a promising opportunity for Arab cinema.”
The Belt and Road Week featured participation from over 40 filmmakers and producers from more than 20 nations, along with a series of specialized forums and professional sessions aimed at advancing the film industry, sharing expertise, and reinforcing cultural integration among alliance members.
It is noteworthy that the Cairo International Film Festival, established in 1976, is among the oldest and most esteemed film festivals in the Arab world and Africa. It remains the sole festival in the region recognized as a Category “A” festival by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). CIFF persists as a significant platform for showcasing exceptional cinematic works globally and fostering cultural exchanges between nations.
