Activate Expands to Dubai: Pioneering High-Tech Gaming in the UAE

Must read

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has solidified its status as a themed entertainment hub by opening the first site outside North America of Activate, a Canadian chain of activity centers. Known for their high-tech games reminiscent of Disney’s Epcot, Activate has debuted in Dubai with nine interactive rooms designed for social media appeal, filled with bright lights, LED screens, and lasers.

One room emulates a “Mission: Impossible” scenario where players must navigate through 180 laser beams, while another offers a “Space Invaders” style game where players destroy digital asteroids by throwing balls at LED screens. The “Push” room challenges players to replicate illuminated patterns on wall panels, similar to games at Epcot.

The Mega Grid room, a viral sensation on TikTok known as the “floor-is-lava” game, features touch-sensitive tiles that light up, creating paths for players to follow. This venue offers both a workout and an adventure, similar to a Mario game.

Adam Schmidt, CEO of Activate, recognized strong social media engagement from the Middle East, prompting the expansion. Headquartered in Winnipeg, Canada, Activate has over 30 locations and plans to open 70 more globally, including 30 in the UK by 2025.

Activate’s partnership with UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim, a leading entertainment organization, facilitated the Dubai launch. The center meets international standards, including support for multiple languages like Arabic.

Activate games have 100 levels of difficulty, ensuring replayability and continuous innovation. Players can compete globally, thanks to standardized room designs and a global scoreboard. The UAE’s indoor entertainment culture, driven by extreme weather, aligns well with Activate’s offerings, setting the stage for future growth.
