Egypt in Talks with Austria’s Plasser & Theurer on Regional Rail Maintenance Hub

Must read

CAIRO — Egypt is in talks with Austria’s Plasser & Theurer, a leading manufacturer of railway maintenance machinery, to establish a regional rail maintenance and technology hub that would support rail networks across Africa and the Middle East.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir and representatives of the Austrian company, according to a statement from the Ministry of Transport.

Under the plan, the hub would provide maintenance services for rail infrastructure equipment, technical training for engineers and technicians, and potential local assembly of track maintenance machinery and spare parts, while facilitating technology transfer to Egypt’s rail sector.

Plasser & Theurer, whose machines operate in more than 100 countries, has long supplied equipment to Egyptian National Railways.

Officials say the initiative would support Egypt’s railway modernization programme, which includes major infrastructure upgrades and new rail projects aimed at strengthening the country’s role as a regional logistics hub.
