Egypt Climbs to Second Place in Africa’s Renewable Energy Race

Must read

Egypt has ascended five spots to claim the second position in Africa’s solar energy rankings, boasting an impressive 707 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity by the close of 2024. This is according to a comprehensive report by the Solar Energy Industry Association in Africa. As the continent pushes towards greater renewable energy adoption, South Africa emerges as the frontrunner with a substantial 1,235 MW, while Zambia secures the third position with 74.8 MW.

Africa is embracing solar power as a pivotal component of its energy future, with total solar power projects set to reach an ambitious 40 gigawatts (GW) by 2024. A significant portion of this renewable capacity will be driven by Egypt and South Africa, nations that are investing heavily in sustainable energy infrastructure. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), these two countries combined are expected to account for 78% of Africa’s total solar energy capacity.

Globally, solar energy is projected to contribute 0.5% to total energy production by 2024, highlighting the growing importance of renewable sources on a worldwide scale. In Africa, solar capacity is expected to soar to 19.2 GW, underscoring the continent’s commitment to meeting clean energy demands.

Dr. Ahmed Zahran, CEO of Egypt’s leading renewable energy firm, KarmSolar, commented on Egypt’s remarkable progress: “This strategic advance in solar energy capacity is a testament to Egypt’s commitment to sustainable development and reducing its carbon footprint. As global energy dynamics shift, Egypt is poised to be a leader in renewable energy in Africa.”

Moreover, experts reveal that Egypt’s government is planning to increase investment in renewable energy projects by 30% in the next year, further solidifying its leadership position in Africa’s energy transformation.

This progress is not just reshaping Egypt’s energy profile but is also attracting international investment. The World Bank has announced intentions to support new solar projects in Egypt, forecasting that these initiatives will boost local economies and create thousands of jobs.
