In a bold move towards sustainable energy, Saudi Arabia has awarded a landmark contract to China’s BYD Energy Storage, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s renewable energy ambitions. The agreement, signed with the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), initiates the construction of the world’s largest grid-scale energy storage project.
Under the terms of the deal, BYD will supply a staggering 12.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity. This project highlights Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancing its Vision 2030 goals, which emphasize diversification and sustainability in energy production.
BYD’s cutting-edge MC Cube-T ESS will be central to this initiative, boasting Cell-to-System (CTS) super-integrated technology with a Vcts index exceeding 33%, a testament to the advanced technical prowess being deployed in the project. Although the financial specifics and timeline remain undisclosed, this collaboration brings SEC’s total contracted storage capacity with BYD to an impressive 15.1 GWh.
In January 2025, PV Magazine detailed the installation of five significant storage systems across Riyadh, Qaisumah, Dawadmi, Al Jouf, and Rabigh, forming the third phase of SEC’s expansive energy storage initiative. This ambitious plan follows the first phase with BYD and the second with Sungrow’s 7.8 GWh contract awarded in July 2024.
Saudi Arabia’s strategic focus on energy storage is underscored by a report highlighting the signing of 26 GWh of BESS projects by November 2024. The Kingdom aims to reach a 48 GWh battery storage capacity by 2030, aligning with its broader objectives to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Moammar, a leading energy analyst, noted, “This project is not just about numbers; it’s about positioning Saudi Arabia as a global leader in renewable energy technology. The integration of large-scale storage solutions is crucial for a stable and sustainable energy future.”
The Kingdom’s efforts are complemented by regional initiatives, such as the UAE’s Masdar, which announced the world’s first 24/7 solar PV and BESS project in Abu Dhabi. This development underscores the Gulf region’s accelerating momentum towards renewable energy solutions.
Saudi Arabia’s recent prequalification of 33 companies for the First Group of BESS projects (G1 BESS Projects) further demonstrates its dedication to involving local and international expertise in achieving its energy goals.
As Saudi Arabia continues to embrace cutting-edge technologies and foster international partnerships, the Kingdom’s energy landscape is transforming, promising a future that harmonizes economic growth with environmental stewardship.
