Business magnate Hisham Talaat Moustafa has unveiled a bold proposal to reconstruct Gaza, aiming to transform the region into a thriving and stable community. The ambitious plan, estimated at $27 billion, seeks to accommodate 1.3 million residents by constructing 200,000 housing units over the next decade. This initiative, if realized, could significantly alleviate the housing crisis in Gaza, offering new hope to its inhabitants.
During a recent appearance on “Al Hekaya” with Amr Adeeb on MBC Masr, Moustafa emphasized the transformative potential of this project. He stressed that creating a “civilized and livable society” in Gaza is crucial for reducing regional tensions and preventing further escalation of conflicts.
The proposal outlines the construction of housing units averaging 100 square meters, with each unit designed to house a family of six. The first phase focuses on providing emergency shelters and field hospitals within 15 months, inspired by effective responses to natural disasters, such as Turkey’s post-earthquake initiatives. This phase aims to temporarily house 300,000 to 400,000 people until permanent solutions are available.
Moustafa highlighted the necessity of a robust infrastructure, including water, electricity, sewage, and roads, pegged at $4 billion. An additional $3 billion would go towards establishing essential services such as education, healthcare, and sports facilities, integral to building a holistic community.
The successful execution of the plan relies on the collaboration of 50 contracting companies, each responsible for constructing 4,000 housing units. Moustafa acknowledged the potential need for international partnerships alongside Egyptian firms, due to ongoing domestic commitments. “This project requires a collective effort,” he stated, “involving both local and international expertise.”
Financing the housing segment alone demands $20 billion, underscoring the need for significant investment and support from international bodies. Moustafa underscored that the project’s success hinges on international political will, calling for a concerted effort to resolve Gaza’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Economic analysts note the potential economic uplift this project could bring to the region, creating jobs and boosting local industries. According to the World Bank, Gaza faces one of the highest unemployment rates globally, exceeding 50%. Initiatives like Moustafa’s could play a crucial role in revitalizing the local economy.
The sixth and final phase of the grand scheme is slated for completion within 30 months from the project’s initiation, setting a brisk pace for development. Moustafa’s vision reflects a comprehensive approach, integrating housing with essential services to foster a sustainable future for Gaza.
