In a comprehensive meeting with MOPCO’s leadership and team, Minister Badawi emphasized the necessity of achieving peak safety and reducing carbon emissions in petrochemical production. He noted that these efforts are crucial to attracting investments and securing funding in an era that prioritizes green and low-carbon initiatives. The Minister expressed his confidence in MOPCO’s capabilities, which have led to partnerships with renowned global green energy companies, Scatec and Yara of Norway, to embark on a pioneering project producing green ammonia.
Minister Badawi also mentioned ongoing collaborations with the Ministry of Electricity aimed at bolstering renewable energy use, fostering an optimal energy mix. This initiative is set to support Egypt’s vision of becoming a regional green energy hub, benefiting the fertilizer and petrochemical sectors by optimizing natural gas utilization and boosting production and exports.
The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting MOPCO’s growth and expansion plans, overcoming challenges, and facilitating the exploration of new export markets through enhanced regional integration and international cooperation.
During the discussion, the Minister urged a swift evaluation of diverse economic strategies to maximize the infrastructure and production capacities of the MOPCO Complex, thereby enhancing the economic benefits for the state.
Eng. Ahmed Mahmoud, Chairman of MOPCO, shared insights into the company’s pivotal role in the market and its green transformation vision. He revealed that the complex fulfills 30% of the local demand for urea fertilizers and exports to European markets while also opening new markets in Africa and the Americas, thus contributing to the national economy’s forex reserves. MOPCO also meets 60% of the local ammonia demand, selling the surplus domestically and exporting the rest. The complex’s total annual production capacity stands at approximately 2 million tons of urea and 1.2 million tons of ammonia.
He highlighted MOPCO’s efficient use of natural gas in boosting production, underscoring its economic advantages by reducing import costs and generating export revenues. The Chairman also announced the successful addition of a new product, ADBlue urea solution, at a concentration of 32.5%, meeting global emission reduction demands.
Environmental sustainability remains at the forefront of MOPCO’s priorities, with efforts to minimize the carbon footprint and enhance competitiveness in European markets. The company has achieved over 19 million safe working hours since 2018 and has significantly cut emissions and resource consumption. It is also expanding its solar capacity and implementing a Zero Liquid Discharge system for environmental protection.
