UAE to Host World’s Largest PLA Production Facility with Sulzer’s Technology

Must read

Emirates Biotech has partnered with Sulzer to establish the world’s largest polylactic acid (PLA) production plant in the United Arab Emirates. The facility, set to be built in two phases with a total capacity of 160,000 tons per year, will position the UAE as a key player in the bioplastics industry.

PLA, a biodegradable alternative to traditional plastics, is essential for reducing dependency on single-use plastics. Emirates Biotech will utilize Sulzer’s advanced PLA technology to streamline production processes, using plant-based feedstock to create high-quality bioplastics with a low carbon footprint.

Sulzer’s PLA technology is already widely used globally, reinforcing the company’s commitment to circular manufacturing. The UAE plant aims to commence construction in 2025 and become operational by 2028, further contributing to the circular economy.

Tim Schulten, Division President of Chemtech at Sulzer, emphasized the project’s significance: “By bringing our advanced PLA technology to the UAE, we are supporting the region’s transition to sustainable materials and contributing to a greener future.”

Marc Verbruggen, CEO of Emirates Biotech, highlighted the partnership’s impact: “This collaboration marks a key milestone in establishing a world-class PLA facility, with Sulzer’s expertise crucial to our vision of leading the biopolymer industry.”

The initiative is supported by key stakeholders, including Shaikh Suhail Ali Saeed Rashed Al-Maktoum, who noted the project’s role in promoting sustainability and economic diversification.

This venture not only enhances the UAE’s bioplastics capabilities but also sets a precedent for sustainable industrial growth in the region
