Must read

In a strategic move aligning with global sustainability trends, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Karim Badawi, announced the signing of three pivotal agreements designed to elevate Abu Qir Fertilizers Company’s operational sustainability and energy efficiency. The agreements aim to significantly reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency at the company’s facilities in a manner consistent with international environmental standards.

The first agreement, signed by Eng. Abed Ezz El Regal, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company, and Mr. Bjorn Q Aaserod, CEO of MPS from the United States, marks a groundbreaking partnership for the supply of green hydrogen. This hydrogen, generated via advanced water electrolysis powered by renewable energy, will replace a substantial portion of natural gas in the production processes. The project will utilize available facilities in Abu Qir’s industrial zone, heralding a new era of reduced carbon footprints and compliance with the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This initiative is expected to boost the production capacity of the Abu Qir ammonia plant by leveraging greener technologies.

In a related development, a second agreement was reached between Eng. Ahmed El-Sherbiny, Vice President of ABB Group for Energy, Automation, and Digital Solutions Industries, and MPS, in the presence of key figures such as Eng. Ibrahim Mekky, Chairman of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company. This partnership will focus on the integration of cutting-edge digital solutions to enhance operational efficiencies across the company’s facilities.

Further bolstering Abu Qir’s sustainability credentials, Eng. Ahmed El Sherbiny also inked a deal with Eng. Abed Ezz El Regal for the deployment of a state-of-the-art automated control system at the Abu Qir Ammonia Plant (1). This initiative aims to optimize natural gas usage, achieving a projected reduction in fuel consumption for steam boilers by 2% to 4% in its initial phase. The system will be expanded to Abu Qir’s other plants, further amplifying energy savings and operational efficiency.

According to Eng. Abed Ezz El Regal, these agreements are instrumental in reinforcing Abu Qir Fertilizers’ leadership in the nitrogen fertilizer sector. By adopting advanced technologies, the company not only enhances its product competitiveness in global markets but also positions itself to avoid future carbon taxes, offering low-carbon products that meet the rising demand for environmentally friendly solutions. This commitment to sustainability is not just a boost for the national economy but also a testament to Egypt’s dedication to meeting international standards of sustainable development.

Industry experts highlight the significance of these developments, noting that Egypt is making notable strides towards achieving its environmental targets. According to a report by the International Energy Agency, the integration of green hydrogen in industrial processes is expected to grow rapidly, with Egypt poised to become a regional leader in this transformative sector.

These agreements underscore a pivotal shift for Abu Qir Fertilizers, setting a benchmark for other companies in the region to follow suit in sustainable innovation and operational excellence.
