The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has unveiled plans to establish the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Company. This pioneering initiative aims to invest approximately USD 530 million (EGP 26 billion) to produce 120,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually, potentially reducing carbon emissions by an impressive 400,000 tons each year.
The new facility will be strategically integrated with existing petroleum companies in Alexandria, with production slated to commence within the next few years. This development positions Egypt as a regional leader in the transition towards greener aviation solutions.
The state-owned Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) will spearhead the production of Egypt’s first SAF, targeting a launch by 2025. This timeline hinges on the successful completion of ongoing feasibility studies. Supporting these efforts, US-based Honeywell, in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, has already finalized a comprehensive feasibility study to assess SAF production capabilities in Egypt.
SAF is an advanced biofuel derived from renewable and non-petroleum sources, such as waste cooking oil, animal fats, and non-food crops. It offers a substantial reduction in carbon emissions—up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel—making it a critical component in reducing the aviation industry’s environmental footprint.
As the global aviation industry faces mounting pressure to cut emissions, Egypt’s ambitious SAF project could serve as a blueprint for other nations. The initiative aligns with international efforts to achieve net-zero emissions in aviation and demonstrates Egypt’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
The integration of SAF production facilities with existing infrastructure in Alexandria ensures a streamlined approach, promoting synergies across the petroleum sector. This project is expected to attract further investments and foster technological advancements, enhancing Egypt’s role in the global green energy landscape.
By embracing sustainable aviation fuel, Egypt not only positions itself as a pioneer in clean energy but also contributes significantly to global efforts in combating climate change. As the world increasingly shifts towards sustainability, Egypt’s proactive measures in the aviation sector mark a promising step forward, offering a sustainable future for generations to come.
