In a bold move for sustainable development, Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, announced a new energy strategy aiming to boost renewable energy’s share to 60% of the national energy mix by 2040. This initiative is part of Egypt’s broader sustainable development plan and seeks to reduce carbon emissions by minimizing reliance on fossil fuels.
During a meeting with Sammy Su, President of China Energy for North Africa and Egypt, Minister Esmat highlighted the role of the Egyptian-Saudi power interconnection project, led by China Energy, as a key component of this strategy. This project is expected to enhance energy security in the region by facilitating electricity exchange between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The strategy also targets an interim goal of generating 42% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Minister Esmat emphasized that this transformation is supported by Egypt’s political leadership and aligns with global environmental goals.
In other related developments, Egypt is exploring partnerships with international stakeholders to further advance its renewable energy infrastructure, ensuring the nation remains at the forefront of green energy innovation in Africa.
