Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture has significantly expanded cotton cultivation this year, increasing planted area by 23% to 311,700 acres nationwide. This strategic move comes as global demand for cotton remains strong.
Of the total acreage, 70,584 acres have been earmarked for seed production, ensuring a steady supply for future planting seasons. The Ministry anticipates a robust harvest, projecting yields between 1 million and 1.2 million quintals.
This expansion follows a successful 2023 season, where Egypt produced 2.1 million metric quintals of cotton, with extra-long and long staple varieties accounting for 81% of the output.
Looking ahead, the Cotton Research Institute is set to introduce a new high-yield long-staple variety, Giza 99, in 2025.
This development underscores Egypt’s commitment to innovation and maintaining its position as a key player in the global cotton market.
