Last week, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez elevated bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, following high-profile talks at the Spanish government headquarters in Madrid. This pivotal agreement signals a new era of collaboration between the two nations, spanning various key sectors that promise to enhance economic growth and cultural exchange.
During the discussions, a series of agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed, marking significant strides in migration, trade, tourism, and infrastructure. The MoU on Circular Migration, signed by Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, Badr Abdel Aaty, and Spanish Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, Elma Saiz Delgado, is aimed at streamlining labor mobility. This initiative is designed to regulate migration flows, thereby expanding employment opportunities while ensuring structured labor markets in both countries.
Enhanced economic and trade collaboration stands at the forefront of this partnership. An MoU focused on economic, trade, industrial, and technical cooperation was signed by Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Hassan El-Khatib, and Spain’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Business, Carlos Cuerpo. According to the latest data from the World Trade Organization, Spain ranks as Egypt’s fourth-largest trading partner within the European Union, with bilateral trade amounting to approximately €2.5 billion in 2022. This agreement is expected to further bolster these figures, driving increased investment and commercial partnerships.
The tourism sector also saw renewed commitment, with an MoU signed by Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty and Spanish Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu. This collaboration seeks to leverage both countries’ rich cultural and historical heritages to boost tourism. According to the Egyptian Tourism Authority, Spain ranks among the top ten European sources of tourists to Egypt, and this partnership aims to enhance these numbers significantly.
Infrastructure and transportation development were discussed extensively, with an MoU signed between Egyptian Minister of Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, and Spanish Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente. This agreement aims to enhance transportation networks and logistics, fostering major infrastructure projects that benefit both nations.
Additionally, Egypt and Spain have committed to supporting peace and development in Africa. A joint declaration signed by Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty and Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, emphasizes promoting stability and sustainable development across the continent.
