Saudi Arabia’s airport sector is poised for transformative growth as Matarat Holding, the nation’s leading airport operator, has awarded a significant contract to the Spanish engineering and technology powerhouse, Sener. Tasked with updating master plans for five major airports—Yanbu, Tabuk, Al-Baha, Al Jouf, and Al Gurayat—Sener’s involvement marks a critical advancement in Saudi Arabia’s aviation strategy.
Under the new contract, Sener will conduct an extensive analysis of each airport’s traffic patterns, tourism potential, and facility requirements. This study will also include an evaluation of capacity, environmental impacts, and future demand forecasts, ultimately mapping out the essential resource investments needed for optimal operation and expansion.
Sener boasts an illustrious portfolio, having contributed to over 190 airports globally. Notable projects include the New Mexico City International Airport master plan and the Lublin airport construction project in Poland. In Saudi Arabia, Sener has left its mark through significant projects, such as the Riyadh Metro and enhancements to the Red Sea Gate Terminal.
This collaboration is a cornerstone of Matarat Holding’s commitment to revolutionizing the Saudi airport sector, aiming to establish it as a global leader in sustainability and efficiency. This ambition aligns seamlessly with the broader objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy and elevate the Kingdom’s status as a key player in international aviation.
Mario Neves, Regional Country Manager of Mobility in the Middle East at Sener, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are delighted to bring our extensive experience in the airport sector to support Matarat Holding. Airports are complex facilities requiring advanced technologies, and we are committed to helping develop modern, sustainable infrastructure in line with Matarat’s vision,” Neves stated.
These updated master plans are anticipated to arm Matarat Holding with cutting-edge tools for strategic planning and decision-making. This will bolster Saudi Arabia’s ability to attract global investment and enhance its position as a premier regional and international aviation hub.
Industry experts emphasize the significance of such developments in the Kingdom’s aviation sector. According to a report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Middle East aviation market is set to grow substantially, with Saudi Arabia playing a pivotal role due to its strategic geographic location and ambitious infrastructure projects.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, an aviation industry analyst, commented, “The partnership with Sener is a crucial step towards realizing the objectives of Vision 2030. By investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure and sustainable practices, Saudi Arabia is well-positioned to become a leader in the global aviation market.”
