Borg El Arab Airport Becomes Alexandria International Airport to Boost City Identity

Must read

In a strategic move to reinforce its regional identity and modernize infrastructure, the Alexandria Governorate, in partnership with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, announced that Borg El Arab International Airport will officially become Alexandria International Airport, effective September 4, 2025.

As part of the rebranding, the airport’s ICAO code will change from HEBA to HEAX, signaling its renewed linkage to Alexandria—known as Egypt’s coastal gem and a key tourist hub.

The renaming aligns with the government’s broader plan to modernize national aviation assets. By aligning the airport’s name with the globally recognized city of Alexandria, officials hope to boost the region’s profile among international travelers and streamline global flight logistics.

In 2023 alone, the airport handled over two million passengers across approximately 17,000 flights, serving both regional and international routes—particularly to Europe and the Middle East—and acting as a vital gateway to Alexandria and the Nile Delta.

Dr. Layla Nasr, an aviation specialist at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport, commented: “Changing the airport’s name and code may seem symbolic, but it carries real impact. It reduces confusion, makes the hub instantly recognizable, and reinforces Alexandria’s status in airline networks.”

The name change will be implemented both operationally and symbolically: New signage will be installed across terminals and transport links, Flight schedules, baggage tags, and navigation systems will be updated to reflect the airport’s new identity and a 12–18 month transition period will likely accommodate both old and new identifiers in systems to avoid disruptions.
