Egypt has launched drilling operations for a new natural gas well at the Nargis offshore field in the Mediterranean Sea, as the government intensifies efforts to raise domestic gas production and curb import dependence amid rising energy demand.
During a field visit aboard the advanced drilling vessel Stena Forth, Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi said the new drilling phase forms part of a broader strategy aimed at accelerating the development of undeveloped gas discoveries and integrating them rapidly into the national production network.
The minister stressed that increasing local gas supplies remains a strategic priority for Egypt, noting that faster development of offshore discoveries would help reduce the country’s import bill and strengthen energy security.
Badawi also praised the operational cooperation between the Egyptian petroleum sector and the international consortium developing the field, led by Chevron Corporation alongside Eni, Mubadala Energy and Egypt’s Tharwa Petroleum Company.
Located within the Nargis offshore concession in the Mediterranean, the field is considered one of Egypt’s important recent gas discoveries, with authorities seeking to accelerate development timelines to reinforce supplies to the national grid and support the country’s broader energy balance.
